February 14th, a dreaded day to some, but for most it’s a day to show love and appreciation to the ones they care about the most. Well, that’s what this holiday should be like, but it seems as though over the years Valentine’s Day, sometimes known as V-Day, has been commercialized and manipulated to be a shopping extravaganza. It used to be a day where candy, cards, balloons, bears and a simple “I love you” would suffice, but now jewelry, mobile and floral companies have capitalized on this day. Media has also played a huge part in the increased expectation from women on this holiday. An expected $14 billion dollars was spent on Valentine’s Day last year. At the end of today’s fiasco, the end results of America’s spending should be epic. Is it still a recession or maybe people are receiving those refund anticipation loans just in the nick of time. Another side of Valentine’s Day is the Anti-tine’s, these are the people who are single, lonely, and bitter. V-Day would not be the same without them; anything dealing with love, cupid or being showered is not allowed. The anti-tine’s are blogging, tweeting and creating those spiteful Facebook statuses to declare their hate for this day. Others are manipulating this holiday by spending their time and money with those that they wouldn’t on any other day.
Valentine’s Day brings out the best and worst in some people, but in all actuality expressing your love to someone should be done daily. It shouldn’t take spending all your hard earned money or better yet money you don’t have, cooking an inexpensive dinner after a hard days work should do the trick, right? Wait, who am I kidding the Valentine’s Day will madness continue on throughout the years, especially with this generation leading the way, we are materialistic at its best.
